DOSSIER: The Butterfly Sanctuary by Leonardo Jiménez

THE BUTTERFLY SANCTUARY

A gripping crime thriller

About the origin of the work

The Butterfly Sanctuary originated from a short story of approximately 6,000 words that the author wrote years ago. Recognizing the story’s potential, he decided to expand it into a full-length novel—an undertaking that posed a unique creative challenge.

An innovative working method

This is the first time Leonardo Jiménez has worked from a pre-existing short story to develop a longer piece. The process offers certain advantages, such as having a strong mental framework for the plot, but it also presents challenges: that same framework can compel the story to unfold in a particular way that may not work as expected when fully developed.

To expand the original story, it was necessary to fully develop each character, giving them rich histories and complex backgrounds. This was the only way to ensure that readers could empathize with them and become emotionally invested in their stories.

The creative process

Despite working from an already advanced idea, the author employed the same techniques used in his previous works: detailed character creation and the development of a structured outline that provided a comprehensive view of each chapter and the work as a whole. The writing process took roughly the same amount of time as We Are Us, approximately one year.

A versatile author

On this occasion, in addition to writing the novel, Leonardo Jiménez also designed the cover, taking another step toward becoming a truly versatile author. The only aspect he entrusted to professionals was the manuscript editing process, which he considers essential to be carried out by a specialist.

Synopsis

Hopetown, 1987. Sergeant Norris, a seasoned police veteran, together with his partner Chatham—newly assigned to the homicide unit—discover that the wave of suicides plaguing the city is in fact the work of a serial killer.

As the investigation progresses, their lives will undergo a metamorphosis that will help them uncover hidden truths—truths that will shake the very foundations of their existence forever.

A police thriller that explores the boundaries between sanity and madness, between what seems to be and what truly is. A story where nothing is as it appears, and where every clue can lead either to the truth or to ruin.
